Joining the reserves and working close protection?

Hi all,

Does anyone know if it matters if you join the TA whilst doing CP work. I only ask this because I had an after thought when volunteering for it on discharge. I wasn't even going to mention it to the companies but when looking at my discharge papers it says on there. Will this effect anything? Any help will be appreciated.

I can see the army might have concerns if you went to certain countries doing private security or were protecting people who represented countries we're not too friendly with. It might be worth seeing if you can get some official guidance, I would think that somene somewhere would have a list of countries not to associate with.

You would have to declare your intention to visit countries were special security considerations apply. I imagine the mod would frown upon it.

you can just imagine the headlines in the Daily Scum, "british forces working as mercenaries!" You would really have to get the right ticks in the boxes!

Just what I was thinking! But I have heard that some guys do it. Does anyone know of anyone and the complications. Thought it would be good to have during quite periods to keep on top of med skills and wpn skills.

DDWhite is absolutely right guys... but I would suggest to you as an SME owner that you should be more concerned about a business's ability to maintain your employment status with them whilst you are off galavanting around the world with the protection of employment Laws... I have a sneaky feeling that your prior enlistment in the Reserve service 'may' put them off in the first place and employing you on a full-time contracted basis... Short term contract, easy in easy out, or self-employed then you should have no problems... CD

Like has been said a lot of guys seem to do it but with so much use of reserves and TA being made these days you may find it difficult achieving a worthwhile work balance and as Mr. Dowd says an employer is going to suck his teeth a bit about someone who has to keep one eye on weekend commitments and sudden call ups for training or even musterings that might take you off the list for up to eight months with very little notice, especially as if/when a tour of duty or an unexpected recall is given, that takes automatic priority and the company has to sort out a replacement.
However, there do seem to be a quantity of individuals who try and combine the two.
Good luck.

Employers can appeal against call-up if there would be a particular difficulty for them in loosing that employee. There's an organisation called Sabre that liaises between TA soldiers and their employees, their website might have some useful information. As far as weekend training goes you'd probably get a few chances in each year to do each bit of training/assessment so you should be able to fit it in on leave.

If your interested in doing CP and the Reserves then PM me for more info i might have an opportunity for you to have a look at.

Well I don't know if its the same with British companies\PMC work, but on the US side of things, most companies don't want a prospective recruit to have any obligation to the military\gov't at all.

If you just got discharge, you'll be on call up anyway. Unless you were a naughty boy!!! I do it and am on retained, wouldn't do CP for an outright enemy of the UK anyway. I'd say you'll be fine.
