Make sure when you have group discussion, that you use as much diversity as you can, that is involve yourself, be open and broad minded and respectful of everyone in the world.
Don't just sit there letting others speak, join in, show you have good clear diverse opinions on matters.
Remember-bullshit baffles brains. The people you are going to deal with do have brains, but unfortunately their brains don't mix with common sense. You may find the odd one who does, but its rare. Some of those on your boards may be good officers, but some will be real dick heads, only in if for promaotion prospects and they will be trying to impress ready for their promotion, so watch them and think what they might be after from you, build rapport ( look it up).
You are right, I do know of people of both sexes who have played the gay card and won, but if you are right and have the right attitude you should be okay.
It is getting to the saturation point of too many females. I knew one shift who had at least 80% female. They were pretty good, but even they needed the male image at times.
Unfortuantely its the same for promotion.
One thing don't do- don't join the Police Community Support Officers. Why? well as my old Chief Constable put it to a PCSO when he asked the CC if he could have more powers, he replied-"why don't you do it proper and join the regulars, you can have all the powers then" that was the Chief, think we knew how he thought of PCSOs out of public view. This also goes for Specials. Don't beleive that it will be a steppings tone to the rregulars, its bullshit to get 'free' policing, they have to have so many for the Gov. stats. I know lads who were specials for years, good ones at that, when they went to join, they were turned down as unsuitable-both had done loads of arrestes and incidents.
Sorry to go on. I recently retired after 30 years. Fantastic job, especially F/A ops etc.
Good Luck
