Evening all,
Looking to move into new line of work in overseas medic/CP. However I lack experience in Iraq/Afghan. I left the army back in '98 as a LCpl CMT1. Currently employed as a HCPC registered Paramedic. Looking around I see a lot of firms want minimum 2 tours of Iraq/Afghan .Am I pissing in the wind with this idea. Advice appreciated.

Cheers.

Hi superhoops

Try this company and let me know how you get on:-

PMSm | Medical Assistance

You need to look at approaching companies that are not advertising positions, rather than relying solely on adverts placed on websites. Job adverts on websites are frequently used by companies as a method to attract CLIENTS and not applicants!!!!

Good luck,

JHD

Thanks JHD for that advice. I'll contact that company plus a few others. I want to put the feelers out on the industry before I start spending out on courses. I'm not going to bullshit my way into the industry and get myself and others into trouble. If that's the criteria then so be it.
Do you particularly know this company..?
Again thanks for taking the time to reply.

Hi Superhoops

I do know people who work for that company but unfortunately that will not help you.

I think that the lack of experience in Iraq/Afghanistan and the fact that you left back in 1998 is going to make gaining a PSD Operator & Team Medic role a very difficult task.

My advice would be to seek a Medic job in a Hostile Environment. After doing that role for a couple of years you could switch over to the PSD Operator & Team Medic combined role.

Another piece of advice is to look on Linkedin and see the qualifications that people have got who are already in the industry, where they are working, and who they are working for. You need to emulate those who have already been successful!

Finally, get a written reference from your current line-manager as this can be used within your CV and/or application. Don't forget that 'self-praise is no praise' so comments from a third party are very valuable.

Good luck,

JHD

Thanks again JHD for the heads up.
I am primarily looking at Medic work as opposed to doing CP work. I know I lack the experience required. I'm lucky to get my CV done by recruitment guru ( wife's friend ) so fingers crossed. Will update if anything comes up.

Cheers

You could significantly enhance your portfolio by getting your OSMC under your belt.

Let's look at pros and cons -

Pros: Ex military and j/nco CMT1 + UK Paramedic
Cons: Been out of military longer than most spend in it. UK Paramedic presumably working for a trust (believe it or not, that's a con).
Your competition: Those leaving the military with CMT1 and shite loads of ops behind them, who are younger and can often work longer and for less, and using their ELCAS and resettlement to do their OSMC + CP training.

Ask yourself this, if you were a recruiter working in HR and tasked with a paper sieve of CVs, would you give you a job when comparing your CV with that of those previously described?

It might be an idea to PM CRStan. Speak to him and see what he says. Heed his advice.

Point taken Starlight
Cheers

I still think that bulking up your skill set and CV with your OSMC would be a good move. You'd then be in a strong position to submit a CV to ISOS or similar. Alternatively, you might fancy going the whole hog, and after doing your BOSIET and MIST, going offshore for a while.

Anyway, don't be too downhearted. Think outside the box an'all that.
