Apologise firstly If this seems like a bit of a random question, but does anyone who has been out on Transit actually speak some Somali ???

I mean the basics for things such as

"move away from the ship" etc etc.

cheers.

I dont know tbh, I do know the Kenyans speak Swahili , but wiether the Somalians do is another matter. Could be a potential double edged weapon to learn it (if your not competant) IE you could have a senario where your stood too amidships and your shouting at a skiff to move away, when infact you might come out with something like..

"My donkey needs to go to market"

lol!

Rat tat tat atat = Fcuk off.

Squirt, squirt whoosh = we are not armed.

Raised arms = come on board, take what you want.

Somali has it's own tongue, and arabic (yemini in base) is spoken courtesy of the Islamic religion teachings.

OJ,

I doubt they would understand me if I shouted or more importantly be able to hear me from 200- 600 metres away, but rounds across the Bow they will hear, understand, think twice and then turn around!!!!

At 400 yards + a 7.62 really gets the meaning home. No chance of a misunderstanding or misinterpretation,
A sort of clarity of voice is called for in these situations, don't you think.

Handy US military Somlia orientation guides.

Also has MP3 downloads of the useful, "Stop", "Drop Your Weapons", etc, etc.

Organised by theme.

I look forward to the .pdf's of the briefings being plagarised like hell.....

Insult monger used to have the Somali for "Your mother's c*nt smells of fish", if you need to really get the party started.

There's a story behind that, isn't there!

anyone here even contemplating the idea of shouting warnings at pirates is either:

A) NEVER been on a boat before
B) living in a dream world

would you shout at the taliban? "stop please or i might shoot at you"

unless your in the middle of still calm water, with no wind and about 50 metres apart with no engines running, your not going to hear **** all.

even if YOU could, do you think the pirates are going to hear your little yelping over the sound of a pair of **** off great outboard motors? and if they do hear you, are they going to care?

and if they are within earshot, then youve already ****ed up. there are no set rules for what range you should fire warning shots but common sense says if their close enough to shout at, then their close enough to raise their weapon and fire several shots straight into your face and chest as your busy shouting at them.

hope that answers your questions
