Weapon state?

Having just seen Dannyboy's thread about the guy shooting himself in the foot I was reminded of a question I have been meaning to ask.
When carrying firearms do you carry "one up" (Round in the chamber) or not?
I have been instructed to do both on different courses and I was wondering what the general opinion and reasoning behind it is.
Cheers
Charlie.

In the job we always carried with the weapon/s 'made ready'. In the mil (NI) we always carried with the weapon 'made safe'. Not sure about the mil in the pit or what the PSD/HECPO guys do, but I suspect that due to their working environment, they would carry 'made ready'. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

RED
>one in the pipe always when entering "indian country"!!
Amber
>mag in, no round chambered.
Green
>mag out, no round chambered.

I would think they would be 99.957% of the time in a red posture. PSD was allowed special badges that reflected this in the Green Zone, which meant they didn't have to clear.

Charle, remember back to what you were taught here, and when to go Amber. If you forgot already I'll remind you next week as I know your a wee bit thik n that hahaha. However on saying that, it really does depend on the Company/Contract SOP's.

Cheers Davie, I could probably do with a refresher, being a bit thick and all!! My question was directed more at individual preference rather than what is taught on courses. As I have done two civvy courses involving firearms and been taught two different things I am interested in getting other peoples views and experiences. I am not saying either is right or wrong, just curious!

I always carried one up the spout. If you fcuk about with sometimes live sometimes not you could be caught out badly when muscle memory kicks in and you are pulling on an empty chamber. Keep it one way or the other.

A good point Tommy, the importance of muscle memory was drilled into us on my HECPO course and with good reason. Was that left up to you to choose or did your unit specify (I am assuming you are referring to your Police days, apologies if I'm wrong)

Nosey wee bugger aren't you! :-) You already know my personal opinion on it, so no need to make further comment. However, I'd be interested to hear of NDs whilst inside Armoured Vehicles. Has anyone any stories of being sat beside some halfwit in an AV who's weapon just happened to go 'Bang'?

Not trying to 'Hijack' your thread Charlie, before I'm accused of doing so by others ;-)

why would you carry a gun babysitting a dog...if you feel you might need a gun keep it ready...no offence it's just my opinion:)

its part of the uniform, I didn't set out to babysit dogs........sometimes it just happens. :)

no offence taken....... each to their own. A lot of my work is very low risk where there is no need to be armed.

If not dictated by some stupid weapon status ( as with US MIL ), always one in the chamber.
"Weapon without one in the chamber - has throwing value only" - old KURT wisdom.
