Weapon state?

My 5 cents,
We are trained to keep our weapons ready to use at all times (locked, loaded with DA), even in a low risk environment.
I'think it also depends on the weapon safety on how you wear it, in my old days carrying the browning HP, for transportation purpose we would have the mag up but no rounds chambered, when we'd go to the range we'd ready the weapon there, in hostile environments it was cocked and ready (not to forget put an extra in the mag) in the new days (walther P5 and Glock 17) the less you fcuk around the better, less chances on ND so its alsways locked and loaded..

Btw, nobody will ever get hands on my weapon, at least not as long as i'm living/consious, i've been there and done that to prove it, nobody who'd try ever succeded and i'm quit sure they dont want to try anymore..
It speaks for itself that you need a good decent holster to carry your weapon in and not some cheap piece of horese manure..

I firmly believe that when the 'shtf', the panic to cleanly rack the slide and to allow the weapon to cycle properly, seat the round and be ready for use instantly, is far more dangerous than having the weapon ready to go, as intended by the manufacturer.

In my opinion the most sensible and accurate post so far on this thread.

I think that the opinions being expressed differ so much as they are being seen from both a MIL active combat view and a private CP view.

On the MIL side I cannot comment as I do not have a MIL background, however there are vastly different levels of threat in the civil CP enviroment. The decision to have a round chambered or not should not be based on "its only throwing value if not cocked and unlocked" but rather IMHO on the job at hand.

A minor point on safety catches, I have 2 handguns at the moment in the safe, both are D/A and neither have manual safety,s.

The fact that you are carrying a weapon suggests some sort of potential danger. I would suggest that you carry it in a way that is the most useful to you should the SHTF. That for me is always ready to go.

I wasn't after a definitive answer Tommy, as is obvious from the replies there are many different opinions and SOP's out there. I was just interested in other peoples preferences and their reasoning behind them, getting some really good posts too, thanks guys.

Christ Rich H and TommyS, I used to respect your opinions but now I can see that you are just wannabe's and will never have the opportunity to get any Gooks out of any wire!:D

I was about to just turn a blind eye but are you for real?

Charlie, you can't slate someone without backing up your thoughts. Are you taking the pi$$ out of me?

You have to elaborate...

You need to read back through the thread mate. You made a comment about "finding them gooks" That I found amusing and then your story about the grenade fuse and "Hollywood attitude" made me laugh again and I posted a joke reply about kicking the grenade back. All a joke, not taking the pi$$ out of you at all just having a laugh. Not sure why you have taken offence but you obviously have so in the interest of harmony I apologise.
Charlie.

NDs etc are exactly that.......negligent.
if you cant be trusted (if trained) to carry your weapon ready to go,
then you shouldnt be carrying one or in the job at all..........

fairly simple in my book....

Charlie - you have made me look a dick now. I apologise profusely. In the middle of moving house and so a little on edge with the frustrating and boring home stuff.

Best rgds,

Was taught NOT to have one in ... BUT that was a civvie type course affair as it were, and i really can't comment on working in hostile and the like, but i think i'd go with the one in the chamber train of thought were i in that situation myself, seems to make more sense to me, that and i'd probably be worse at throwing the actual gun at someone than i would be shooting the thing, we all know women can't throw for shit, so going on kurts logic, i'd have to say i'd go prepared

Well get off the internet and start helping move boxes you slacker:)

If you're going to carry it, have it ready. A pistol is, by definition, a reactive, defensive weapon. The two seconds it takes you to make ready is the same two seconds it takes tommy T (the opposition) to drop you. Also, it takes two hands to make ready and chamber check - you will probably be wanting to fend your boss into cover if you have the need to draw your pistol. Confidence and competence come into the equation as well. Stay safe all. Dave T
