hi I'm looking at attending a course with phoenix ,(as everyone seemed to recommended them) and talking to the operation director he gave me loads of information about Phoenix which is great, but after a little investigation I'm not sure the this phoenix is the same company that everyone raved about being the best,

does anyone have any info to share ?

Did you do the course?
There is another Phoenix company called Phoenix Security which were bought out by G4S. I also am considering Phoenix Groups CP course. I clarified that they are 2 separate entities and are not associated.

However there is nothing like first hand experience. They do come highly recommended and their clientele speaks for its self. But who knows.

I will ask you where you want to work, and if you have done any research on it, because if your looking at the HE side of life I wouldn't bother, don't listen to advice unless you have done research, there is very little work available and the pay now is shocking, if your seeking UK side of life then look at Excellentia, Horizon, and look at Mobius, all have pretty top notch instructors who won't fill you with s**t. Iraq and Afghan is not the place to be anymore, yes I'm sure there are the odd contract worth working on that pays ok, but 99.9% of them are poor. If your like a lot of guys leaving the military and taking the shite money then crack on, only ones who are benefiting are the PSC's most definitely not the boys on the ground.

My advice is use the money on another avenue thats got some career longevity and progression.
 
It seems there are 2 or 3 Phoenix's - G4S Phoenix and PhoenixGroupPLC of Birmingham - I am looking at doing the latter on 3rd December - 17 days. They are also an agency and claim to only use Phoenix CP staff.
What do people think? A local security company in Newport said a CP course is a waste of money as there is little demand for them - there are enough ex Regiment, Paras and Royal Marines who have CP in their DNA making too much competition for us who only have a 2 week course.....any views on that? I am an ex matelot and liked Tim's blog. Keep in touch. I am Nigel. Used to work regularly as a hydrographic surveyor (survey recorder) ...until oil slump s- looking for alternative career - done teh SIA Door Supervisors course.
 
Phoenixes.......which one??!!

Hello Blaine - I am having the same confusion - at least 2 Phioenix's. There is a G4S Phoenix in Hereford and a PheonixGroupPLC in Birmingham - I have had lengthy conversations with the Ops director Mike Preston - he reckons there is a good market for even newly trained CP operatives.
however, I spoke to Billy Jones of BJSecurities of Newport who said that there were so many ex Regiment, Paras and Royal marines with CP training in their DNA, that for someone without that background, a CP cert is a waste of money......but it does give you a SIA Level 3 Btec award - and I am sure some insurances must insist that their celeb has 'x' number of these - so if they have team of 10, OK, 5 or 6 will be ex Regiment etc on £300 a day, so if we newbies offer £75 per day just to get it on CV .......
 
Please do yourself and favour and completely avoid Phoenix Birmingham!!!

They are a terrible company who have horrific reviews if you search a little harder!!

I honestly know of several people who have been turned down positions on the back of they completed a course with Phoenix Birmingham. Their course is viewed as substandard in the industry and the management staff will essentially tell you anything to get you on the course!!

On the face of things it would appear they have looked after some substantial clients, however, these clients or rather their management have been blagged for Phoenix to get the contracts, and then they have then gone on to make some serious allegations and complaints about Phoenix Group Birmingham.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!

You are far better spending your hard earn't money with a reputable company who have the correct backgrounds and knowledge to bestow onto their students. Good luck.

Hello Buddy, that statement from BJSecurities isn't true at all. CP Teams are not just made up of Ex SF, Para's and Marines, and its not in there DNA either, many many years ago I worked on a team that had 1 Ex SF Team Leader the rest of us were a mix of Ex Military and Police, and I will say that the Team Leader was a bit of a flapper at times, just because they were Ex SF or any other Military Unit doesn't always make them good or great CP operators.

Its all about how you conduct yourself and knowing your principle/s, there is much more to CP that just putting on a suit and following the Principle around. Some ex military guys find it difficult to adjust from the military way to the Civilian way, I did my training and one guy was an ex marine, when we were out and about in town he stuck out like a sore thumb, he couldn't relax and didn't know how to just blend in to his surroundings.

Granted there isn't the work around that there once was, but most these days is by word an mouth as like this site its been over run with the "WALTER" clan and as the thread reading here goes, rogue companies making a quick buck but filling guys with empty promises.

My advice has always been to sit the seminars that the decent course providers offer and ask your questions, most will tell you that its a tough industry to get started in and the first gig is the hardest to find. I have been one who these days tries to advice people to seriously research things before parting with hard earned money and could basically lead you to nothing.

However at this time of year there will be more work about and some can lead to that lucky break or a good solid job full time. And as standard RST is a good place to start.

Hi CM,
