Seaman Guard Ohio detained by Indian Coast Guard at Tuticorin port on Saturday

In a swift operation, the Indian Coast Guard on Friday night detained a Sierra Leone-flagged vessel with 25 armed guards on board, at Tuticorin.

Though the vessel - Seaman Guard Ohio – belongs to AdvanFort, a US-based firm that provides maritime security, sources in defence agencies said the crew and guards could not explain why they had entered Indian waters. They had no documents authorising their possession of sophisticated arms and ammunition, which included semi-automatic weapons and self-loading rifles.

According to Inspector-General and Commander Coast Guard (Region East) Satya Prakash Sharma, the operations centre here received information late on Friday that a vessel with armed guards on board was seen near the Tuticorin coast.

After putting the vessel under electronic surveillance, Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Naiki Devi’ intercepted and escorted it to the Tuticorin Port on Saturday.

The guards/crew comprising British, Estonian, Ukranian and Indian nationals were interrogated by a multi-agency joint investigation team at Tuticorin.

The authorisation for possessing weapons on board was yet to be produced by them.

Probe as to whether the vessel was involved in arms trafficking would be undertaken by the coastal police, he said.

According to defence sources, the crew members claimed that they were involved in providing security to Gulf-bound merchant vessels, and that they were authorised to carry arms.

Official communication

The authorities were waiting for an official communication from the company’s headquarters to vouch for their claim.

When contacted by The Hindu , an official at AdvanFort’s emergency centre in US said she would consult her headquarters and get back on the development. However, there was no official word from the company till late on Saturday.

The official website of AdvanFort says it is a privately held company with headquarters in Washington, DC and offices around the world.

The company provides comprehensive maritime security solutions for the commercial shipping industry.

The security teams comprise former US, UK and NATO Special Forces operators who are expertly skilled and equipped to deter piracy measures and allow for safe passage in international waters, the website said.

Message from the CEO

Will Watson

Maritime Professional

The management of AdvanFort International, Inc. wishes to thank and commend the Indian Coast Guard, port officials at Tuticorin and the Tamil Nadu police for allowing our vessel, SEAMAN GUARD OHIO, to enter the port both to take on fuel and to escape the effects of Typhoon Phailin.
The OHIO is an Operator Support Vessel that provides an accommodations platform for AdvanFort’s counter-piracy guards between transits on client commercial vessels transiting the High Risk Area. As such, in addition to its normal crew, the OHIO had a number of PCASP (Privately Contracted Armed Security Personnel) team members aboard when it entered the Indian port. That international group includes British, Estonian, Ukrainian and Indian nationals.
“I want to personally thank the Indian government for offering a safe harbor during this typhoon to the crew of our good vessel OHIO,” said William H. Watson, president of AdvanFort. “We look forward to returning this vessel to its duties as quickly as formalities and resupply operations are concluded.”
As these men routinely provide armed counter-piracy protection, they also had aboard their uniforms, protective equipment, medical kits, rifles and ammunition – all of which is properly registered and licensed to AdvanFort. As is routine in such matters, Indian authorities are auditing the vessel’s records during the port stay while supplies, provisions and fuel are being transferred to OHIO.
The crew and guards are remaining aboard OHIO during its port stay and are well and receiving fresh food and water, according to AdvanFort’s agents in the port

funny how the windspeed and swell in the Ohio's last known position prior to this call for help for sheltering from a typhoon over 1000 miles away was less than 15 knots and less than 1.2 mtr swell... but hey better safe than sorry! waft.....

looks like they are trying to make out it was a test for the indian customs....... either that or they spent a shit load of time coming up with the news brief........... crew and guards staying on board ohio......wonder if they have been confined to ship or whatever you guys call it...... for illegal firearms and having to many SF personnel on 1 ship..

India has had a mega-stiffy since those 2 guys got killed by the Italian blokes.
Paperwork to go into Indian ports gets worse everytime you go there and it's very, very rare, even after all the paperwork, to even be allowed off your vessel to stretch your legs in port, let alone get a shore-pass.
I think India thinks of itself as the US in that area as they act identically and just like power-tripping.
My thoughts go out to the blokes on that boat who will soon be very fcuked over this.
I'm sure the management is doing everything they can and aren't going to make like a swastika :)

Well between this and the "Captain Phillips" film just being released, it seems that the pirate issue is very much in the public eye. Not that I'm suggesting that someone from Hollywood might have bunged the Indians a suitcase full of cash to create some publicity.
