No longer a policeman, but when I was (in Australia - and applicable in all states), all police officers armed from their first day out of the academy. In those days it was with a Ruger .357 magnum, nowadays they have Glocks.
Also...no worries WOMANWHERESMYTEA. Never take offence...discussion/debate interesting. Whether serving or former police or military, we're all going to be a little biased in our views about which service we came from. I probably am.

To defend themselves if needed. Off the top of my head I can think of at least 10 policemen murdered in shooting incidents in the last 20 years on the eastern seaboard here. Sorry...thats how it is...not a perfect and safe world we live in unfortunately...wish it was.
In so far as the security services...I have a job that I enjoy...and work with people I know.

Hi all, firstly I'm brand new to the site, so be gentle with me, or I'll not respect you in the morning.
I've enjoyed reading this strand but am a tad concerned. I note that the strand was started by someone whose only interest in policing was carrying a firearm? Just to bring you all up to date with me, I'm ex military RMA1, ex met firearms officer and team medic and now an HPC registered paramedic. Given that my career went from the green to blue, I feel that I may be somewhat qualified to comment. The work done by service personnel is completely different to that done by HO police firearms officers. The fact that I would 'carry' as part of my daily job, doesn't mean that I could avoid all of the other policing issues. If there's an RTC infront of your vehicle, it has to be dealt with. If you witness offences being commited, they has to be dealt with, etc etc, so to be a firearms officer requires a significant amount of general policing experience before consideration.
With regards to PCSO - don't get me started on that. I got injured on duty, and slung out on a pension. They got rid of loads of us in the mid 90s ~ just as PCSOs came into the service. Strange coincidence or what. I've tried to get back in loads of times arguing that I'm more than fully fit, and as a SR Paramedic and an experienced PC could be integrated back into a team (following update training of course). They don't even give me the benifit of a response?

On a more serious note I am getting a bit concerned at some of the forum subjects that people are allowed to put on here.
I agree with Hippy that this thread should be binned before it gets started! On a personal note please don,t encourage special population group individuals to personally find out who will turn up at their h/a.

I thought the original post was quite funny, especially the grammar and spelling mistakes which will have young Mark failing on Day one
You need to brush up on that there (their?)
PCSO's are the Labour governments response to "we have alienated the public so much that the public doesn't want to volunteer any info to the "politically targeted police force" we need to pay some of them to snitch, lets give them a uniform as well." The fast tracking stuff has been talked about again and again and who knows perhaps someone will do something sometime but i doubt it will be soon(especially in armed response units as suggested) Perhaps there will be a fast track for Special Constables, some who have attained Sergeant rank and 10 years service STILL have to start on day one to become a regular!!!!! What a waste of money huh,.. hold on that's mine and yours taxes. Doh.

It is an interesting thread. Just elaborating/explaining from my earlier, circumstances/geography probably one reason why police are armed in their day to day duties here.
Having a much smaller population than the UK, and spread out over such a large area, support from the equivalent of CO19 not available in many instances. All state and territory police forces (there are 8) have these equivalents, mainly based in the capital cities, but in many instances incidents are over and done with in some areas before they have the chance to arrive – due to the distance involved in travelling.
Firearms not something I personally like too much, only carried one as issued as a means of self defence or to defend colleagues or others if no other alternative existed.
Lax gun laws here as well while I was in – since tightened. Anyone over 18 could buy a rifle/shotgun over the counter, no license/permit required, few questions asked other than to provide ID and not be a prevented/prohibited person. Proved deadly to some police in some violent domestic disputes when Mr Average (who was normally a law abiding citizen) in a fit of rage suddenly became a dangerous armed man with the rifle he used once a year on shooting/camping trips, the police arriving being unaware of this.
Far more to police work than this aspect as has been said – & you hope you never strike it.
