The true cost of becoming a trainer. (First aid specifically)

First of all. Sorry if this seems like an arsewiping post.
But i have been looking into becoming a trainer for First Aid, and other HSE related things.

At first i was doing it out of boredom while working abit of static, something to keep me occupied.
But then i started to think, that this could be a viable business if i ran it correct. (If not now, then in the future)
Having a look at prices anyway, and to be honest. Its completely messed with my head.
So just a quick question anyway. Am i correct with this?

I have to go on a course which enables me to become an instructor for first aid at work. (Costing around £400)
Then i also need to pay these fees to HSE?
New FAW approval £1512
Post approval monitoring visit £ 567
Renewal of Certificate of Approval £ 106

Or am i wrong and have got 2 different things mixed up?

You also have to have a valid HSE FAAW ticket as well.

Thanks to all who posted here. But specifically K9medic who not only sent me the info i needed but abit about the training industry its self and advice on how to get started.

And then theres experience. Do you have the experience of first aid to be able to teach it?
You be me to it..

I would suggest that a few years experience as a regular VAS first aider, as ambulance crew, or as a military medic is a minimum.

As the old saying goes "virgins can't teach you to ****"

I have to say guys, that even though I aggree wholeheartedly with the 'experience' thing, the first aid training industry, is rammed with people who have little or no real experience other than teaching FAW.

In short, if anybody has held an FAW cert for 3 years, so after a first refresher course (don't have to have done any first aid in that 3 years) AND you hold a varifyable teaching/instructors ticket (in any subject not only first aid), that person can set themselves up as a FAW trainer.

If however you do not instruct a subject, there are instructors courses(know as train the trainer courses) available through the usual suspects.

Personally, it bores the living crap out of me. The first few courses you run, will be good fun, but once you've done 4 courses a month for a while - well you'll see.

Another tack you might like to take with this, is to buy into the AofFA franchise http://www.aofa.org/ refers. It's cheaper and to some extent achieves the same objective. Drop them a line and ask for details. It'll give you the chance to see what the market is like.

Hope this helps,

Try nuco training. They offer a 5 day course which includes and element of distance learning and essay writing but culminates in:

HSE First Aid at Work certificate
First aid at work instructor / assessor certificate (Registered nuco trainer)
City & Guilds 7303 Adult education tutor (PTLLS)
You will be able to work in association with nuco and they provide:

Their HSE number
Powerpoint presentations
Books
Equipment
Course scheme of work and session plans
Direction, advice and protocol updates
Delegate certificates etc

The cost is around £1000 but you will be subject to assessment during your first few courses, by nuco and the HSE to ensure you maintain their standards.

Very good way of getting a business up and running asp - you use their materials, admin systems and reputation and then advertise and deliver your own courses.

Any Q's, please feel free to ask.

Good luck

And then theres experience. Do you have the experience of first aid to be able to teach it?
I do have some experiance in situations which require first aid. Although i dont have any qualifications in it anymore.
Although its my experiance isnt as large as some people have i do feel i have a large knowledge of the subjct already and i would be able to deliver the training as well as most trainers out there.

I wouldnt want to invest money in something which i would fail at. If that was the case i would become a skydiving instructor. :D

Not rtying to put you of the idea mate but if I was going on a first aid course Id expect the instructor to have a lot of experience rather than just some experience.

Maybe I should have become a DS instructor - after all Ive worked a year on the doors between other jobs....:D

You should, you probably could do better than most trainers out there. Many companys out there supply instructors who have never worked a door in the life.

Maybe I could but I dont think that a year on the door is enough to instruct. Compared to the likes of Oddjob on here and some of the blokes on the working the doors site they've probably forgotten more than I know!!!!!

It might be me but if Im going to pay someone to instruct me I want someone with many years experience doing what they are teaching me.

You will get students asking about you background before signing up for classes, asking awkward questions during a class, or looking for your view on an experience they had.

Without real experience you will only be able to teach the course not teach first aid or answer the students questions.

FAAW + a few experiences + 7302 = piss poor teaching and students without a proper education.

As an mentor once told me "Students don't fail an education, we do by failing to teach".
