To snowboard or to ski?

Are you a boarder or a skier? Is there still the animosity between both? Within my group of friends there's only 5 skiers but 28 boarders. is it still "cooler" to board? The missus, 12 yr old son and i all board. I chose to board as i reckoned the chances of twisting knees etc was far greater on skis.

Any opinion?

I used to ski as a kid but turned to snowboarding , waaaaay "cooler" ! Where do you go , the Chillfactore ?

Thats what ski lifts are for! And you can always warm up with a few Gluhweins although not too many as alcohol has triple the effect at altitude and you kinda need your balance. And there's always a chance a principle is into their winter sports.

Boarding by far although i biased as I cant ski. Well I can do a snowplough but thats a bit like saying yeah I can drive but I dont have a licence. I had the same theory on the knee twisting thing.

I've been skiing all my life and still love it. Last year we took a family snowboarding lesson in France which was pretty hilarious with the crashes etc. Me & my teenage son got on well and carried on for the rest of the week and really progressed. Mrs MJ744 had a cold bum and went back to skiing. As did Junior. Can't wait to go again this year, but still love skiing and will do that too.
I reckon it's a 50/50 accident wise. I can sort of control a fall on skis by positioning the body/skis during the slide. On the snowboard I just seem to get thrown off much faster and it seems to hurts far more. But then that's what the Gluwein is for :)
Anyway, have fun !

We're Chillfactore regulars. Also booked to go to Snowbombing next year again in Mayhrhofen in Austria. Chillfactore normally release they're deals near the end of the month so keep your eyes peeled as we got a months pass for £50!! My only problem is finding trousers to fit as im over 6'4" and prefer them baggy. Unless i want to pay £400 i'll just sew mine up again.

Without a doubt ...its Skiing. In the top extreme resorts of Verbier and Chamonix..skiing is king! However, every skier looks a prat in a snowplough a every snowboarder looks a dick in their baggy trousers with the arse hanging out, on their knees with the board stuck to their feet.

Dicks with sticks or gays on trays? Now there's a question.............:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::D

Personally, skiing is king, so I suppose I'm one of the dicks with sticks. I've had some fantastic trips to the Alps, Canada and US and worked as a ski instructor for a number of seasons (and yes, before anyone kicks off, I am qualified).

It's worth mentioning that a proportion of people of all age groups were taking ski lessons, despite having boarded for years. The reasons given were that they were fed up with having to sit or kneel all the time and they were fed up with trying to shuffle along the flatter bits (wrong terrain then maybe?). I also think that with the advent of modern twin tips and snow parks, it's put a younger mindset with a certain coolness back into skiing, that was maybe lacking within the alpine discipline of the sport.

So, not dissing the boarders, but skiing all the way.

For those interested:

Favorite skis - Volkl Mantra. An amazing all mountain tool
Boots - Fisher RC4. Snug with loads of feedback through the boot, but still keep the pinkies toasty.
Favorite resort - Difficult one, but it's got to be Grand Teton which is close to Jackson
Best alpine chalet - Seventy3 in LesArc, France. Fantastic atmosphere, great hosts and top notch scoff.

Fook, you've got me all fired up for a trip now........It's given me a slight buzz in me pants;):D:D:D:D:D

See you all in the powder guys.

Telemark............waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cooler than all the above:cool:

The days of pussers planks and Alico boots are long gone.

Black Diamond Havocs.

Rottefella NTN bindings.

Scarpa Terminator X boots.

Seriously good kit and an absolute dream to ski.

After working the last few seasons in Europe and Canada, boarding has peaked and now skiing is on the comeback with the new style of freestyle skiing, new ski technologies, wider longer skis. It's easy to pick up skiing boot takes decades to master. Boarding is tricky to learn but no so difficult to master.

The mrs's new board and bindings have arrived, (albeit in nice pretty pink and floral design) has anyone any experience or knowledge of Raven boards and Raven fastec bindings from Austria? Personally im waiting for all the uber cool people to buy this seasons MUST have new boards and bindings. My ebay app is at the ready as im not one for wasting money just to be fashionable. Plus my nephew is currently in Colorado so he's keeping his eyes peeled too.
On another note, loving the friendly banter between pricks on sticks and us gays on trays!! Ohhhhhhhh matron!!

Here's one for you all.

Quick name drop I'm affraid, but 3 years ago I spent an obscene amount of time in Whistler, and while there, worked the ski patrol for a few days.........

Just outside Whistler, there's a small factory making the most amazing skis and boards. Check this out Prior Snowboards and Skis 2011

Not overly expensive, and they'll ship to almost anywhere.

I used some of their 'Originals'. Fookin' amazing tools, and are a close contender to my favorite ski, the Volkl Manta. With the Priors though, you can choose your top sheet and base designs, so you can gucci them up as much or as little as you like.

Now that's sexy..............................
