the reason i ask this is that i find myself being asked more frequently by students. I'm wondering now if this is the time to affiliate or join, as Bob Dylan says 'times they are a changing' . Looking for some feedback.

Specs,

To which organisation are you referring?
NASDU, SIA(ACS), SSAIB, NACOSS (NSI), Chas, Safe Contractor etc.

There are so many these days all claiming to be the one, albeit in their own chosen field.
I am not a fan although I hold Sia ACS, I have personal standards, which are far greater than what the Sia require, they tick a few boxes for some of the clients due to their insurance requirements but I had them as clients before the ACS crap came along.

My standards gained the client and kept the client not the accreditation or affiliation..

So is there a benefit, none that spring to mind, although due to client restrictions and insurance requirements then YES, unfortunately without ticking said box you get excluded from even tendering sometimes.

This could make an interesting thread.

This is currently an on going issue with myself. I am establishing my own security consulting practice - it is hard as my previous job was in shall we say an 'enclosed environment', networking was a little restricted and there is very little call for my particular specialism within the industry, how ever my broader knowledge base of 'security and business continuity skills' has given me more freedom.

I have had numerous discussions with individuals over the past few months in regards to belonging to or becoming a member of an 'institute' as they say "it backs up what you say you do". To a certain degree I can understand this specifically from a clients point of few, especially if they are looking at using my services for the first time, they like to see credentials or letters after a name or an affiliation, which I thinks keeps them in their comfort zone..

I want to succeed then in my mind I need to be better than everyone else, bearing further CPD in mind and long term goals -I have submitted affiliated associate membership to ASIS so as to commence working towards my CPP certification as well as non statutory membership of the Business Continuity Institute so as to obtain the Certificate of the Business Continuity Institute, both then back up my professional experience.

I think belonging to at least one organisation shows to a potential client who may not know anything about security that you have at least attended some sort of training course?
I am with SIA, although like above I far exceed their training standards which is not hard! A lot of companies ask for this even if you work outside the UK.
In the dog world I am a member of NASDU again this shows I have under taken training. All the benefits of which I am unsure fully as Im new to the dog world.

thanks premier . the Business we have is a SIA Approved Contractor...... it's just I had some guys/ women from out side the uk training with us and paper and more paper was the Magic thing for them to take Back home with them so this has got me thinking . I have enough work in scotland so iam not up or down about the SIA its just to make the men/women happy if thats what they are looking for .

hope your well.

Personally I think most professionals set their standards far in excess of the so called governing bodies. So the only benefits I can see are those in the tendering process. Which, in all honesty is a joke. Customers asking to be part of NASDU etc when you know you operate far beyond the basics of the British standards.

I agree with Mark, the standards of the associations are pretty basic and mean nothing really. However Jim, if all you are trying to do is impress Johnny Foreigner then join the BPSCA they have better standards, a pretty badge, and the word "Police" in their name, that should do the trick.

SCT. i have not forgotten your good advice that you gave me a few yrs back about associations.

if scotland get independence then the rules may change .

my self..... I am British and Proud But first and foremost I am British

we have decided not to affiliate or join any organizations just cant see what good this would do for us in the long run .

Specs,

I am well thank you, hope you are also.
I'm betting you are busy and due to be even more busy with the commonwealth games only around the corner.

If you want to print a million or so certs for your overseas trainees try vista print buddy...
I believe they are the cheapest and they use quality paper.
Lol
