Back into the line of the original post, its also great fun following the (plane clothes) security officer around (while killing time, shopping with my lady) every time he looks at me i look back and wink at him, some really dont know how fast they can get away.
Luckily never been followed around store, however I do work in ASDA so do understand where your coming from. Our store is very different. I always make sure our team do not follow customers around the store on foot - I know it can be great as a deter but we simply watch the CCTV and not bother or harass a customer in any way unless they take an item and LEAVE the building - it's more fun watching people taking items, thinking they have got away with it but to be stopped by us - all part of SCONE.
But we all look out for different things, alot have been said in this thread..
People looking down the aisle instead at the item they select, they way people carry a basket is another huge one for me personally, people who come to the podiums and try to look at the screen or ask who i'm watching or what i'm watching. Loads.. lol

Watching three little scrotes nicking sweets and milkshakes from my local Tesco earlier. Security guard was young, fat as f**k and totally oblivious, he did have his SIA badge on display though so he must be good! I almost did him a favour and tipped him off but he was so busy eating a mars bar and gawping at my Wifes arse I decided not to bother!! F.U.B
As a lot have said its an awareness issue there are really only two types of people interested in security fellow workers and scrotes and as most of us come from the armed forces we fit well into both catagories!!
To add to the funny stories tho whilst on a training excercise the local plain clothes centre guys noticed one of the team covertly(not covert enough) following this old guy from store to store I spotted these two guys then following my guy following the VIP so for a period of time you had this parade of ducks in a line which was the most amusing thing to see but got better when a third member of the team identified one of the store guys as a potential threat and tried to extract the VIP which ended up with me having to stop the store dets as they then thought it was a mugging the look on his face as i pulled him out of his own store as he went in calling for assistance on his radio only to find both the radio and his arm behind him he never even saw me and was most put out that he was being followed! all this without the VIP aware was prob the funniest thing i ever saw almost a scene from Benny Hill with a bit of Dads Army thrown in!!

I have been contracted by stores for integrity testing of their security. Be it obvious or not.
I got one plain clothing sec once; This guy was massive, I am not small my self but this fellow looks like the kind of person who is asked to leave the gym for fear of eating the equipment.
I went up to the gentleman nicely and asked if he could help me load one of the ridding lawn tractors in my trailer. Well we pushed it out side and around the building and then I explained to the gentleman that he should have asked for proof of purchase.
The man was so embarrassed and ashamed of him self I just left it at that. The store owner found it funny enough as well and let the man stay on. For about two months after that the sec had one of his uniformed guys standing at the door asking customers for their proof of purchase.
In those two months the store in doing that prevented around 300 attempts. Perhaps the fellow was having an off day but four later he is still there.

i get followed all the time in stores! i even get suspicious looks while im still in uniform!!
after 12 years in security i think im reasonably good at picking out scum as they enter stores, either while im passing or entering to shop myself! it has got to the point that my missus has now started shopping alone cos i keep following folk around!
one particular case comes to mind when i entered morrisons in aberdeen and saw a male enter just after me, 3 security guards standing and he walked past them all! he then proceeded to the booze aisle and filled his jacket with 4 £30 bottles of malt whiskey!! then he simply walked out the store past all 3 guards!!!!!
not one of them had a clue!
