Likelyhood of work for new female CPO with no military/police background.

Hello all!
I have just joined and been looking on here for the last few days and you guys sound like you could provide me with some much needed answers and advice.
I am doing a CPO course in a few months and unlike most on here I do not come from a military background. I have worked since leaving school in mainly customer service, management and finance.
I have always wanted to train as a CPO but have not been able to due to family commitments until now.
I am lucky to have a friend who is a busy CPO and he has given me a real picture of what to expect.
From what I’ve heard and read on here the first few jobs are the hardest to come by.
I am 32, very tall, strong and physically fit. I am switched on and get on well with a team. I live less than an hour’s commute from London and have the flexibility to work at real short notice for varying periods of time.
Am I wasting my time and money or should I just go for it?!
Any advice would be much appreciated.

hello clairem
welcome to the forum i have the same background as you and i would say go for it and all the best i have worked with many females and not all of them are exmil or excivpol
who are you doing the course with this may be the only thing that might hold you up but apart from that all the best

cheers ed

Hi Ed
Thanks for the reply.
My friend pointed me in the direction of Excellentia in London.
I've done quite a lot of homework as their are a lot of agencies out there.

they are a good TP mate you wont go wrong with them has your mate given you the info on the companys and what they do festival, CP and stuff

No, you are not wasting your time. Train with a reputable training provider, continue learning and network.
There are not enough women in the industry.

Go with Excellentia, I know most of the team personally and can not rate them and their course high enough.

Good luck and drop me a line when you have your licence.

Welcome Claire... I am aware that just sometimes on here we are guilty of eating our young..! Not that you are young of course but neither are you old however, if I may I am going to flip the side of the coin and state that may be you won't be wasting your time in training and spending vast amounts of money on the CP Industry, ironically only time will tell... I do notice though from your brief resume that you have absolutely no foundation whatsoever in 'Security' albeit you possess commercial experience... So... my point being? is that you may have to progress your career with 'Any' foot on the ladder or a peripheral career path... whichever I wish you well with your future... CD

Sorry Carl, your post didnt come through until after I'd typed my last one.
Thank you for your advice, after much research I am aware its going to be one of those 'only time will tell' things.
Im hoping if I get my head down, work hard, network and take whatever opportunities I can to start hopefully I'll get somewhere.
Thanks again

If it were me as CD says you do have zero experience in the security world. However that's easily rectified. You can get door work and there's a fair few asset protection jobs out there right now. You can also get experience of festival work. Networking is the key. Doing these other jobs will bring you into contact with other security professionals and your network and reputation will grow.

Really no need for any apology Claire we are having a discussion here that's all, but I thank you for your courtesy as I trust you found me to extend to you the same... and as I have said I wish you well with your future... perhaps you would like to keep us all up to date with your progress..? only if you wish to of course.

Claire, I know a few females who have no military/ police or even previous security background, who have gone from courses and done very well for themselves. I know some who have impressed their instructors and have been used on prestigious jobs shortly afterwards. The main thing is the calibre of your peers that will be also training with you as you can learn alot from them as well as the instructors. I know there is a demand for good female operatives, so if you are good and impress those around you, you won't have too many problems. I used to be involved in a TP and often had calls to recommend good females, so make sure your'e good lol.

train with excellentia they have a good reputation, its who you know not what you know that counts on the circuit.
Do some festival, door work, stay away from G4s. We always need good females. Good luck
