Recommend me a CP course.

Hello everyone,

I'm looking to train as a CPO and have no idea which company to do my training with...

I'd prefer it to be fully residential and for now I'm only looking to work in the UK or low risk environments so don't really need the HE and firearms elements at the moment.

Due to some ill health a few years ago I didn't pass the CPO course that I did with the NSC in Poole... but my health is now solid and am getting my general health and fitness levels up and up....

So which companies would be generally best for me with no military experience...

If it helps I have roughly 7 years door supervision experience.

I find it very hard to recommend a course and often wonder how others manage to. Why? Simply I have only ever completed government run courses (both UK and USA) so having never done a 'civvie' course, how can I recommend one?
And those who have attended a civilian run course probably have nothing to compare it with, so while they feel it may have been good, on what grounds are they qualified to judge?
It needs a properly trained (govt) experienced and independent 'operator' to attend a few of these courses.. Then and, in my opinion, only then could a proper balanced recommendation be given.

Problem with that is that any government trained operator will have no wish to pay for a commercial course. Nor would any commercial TP with or without a government background want a none paying 'student' taking a the place of a paying client.

It comes down to checking the background of the company and the TP's involved.

I do see what you mean Hippy and Saward, but in fairness, after a sit down coffee for two hours you get to appreciate the mindset in approach to standards. Combine this with a specialist background and you are able to consider the huge difference between one company and the other.

Well, what else can I say except if the student is going to a get a free leading book on the subject as well you can't go much wrong!

Saward, I never said it would happen. Indeed I would be amazed if it did, I very much doubt many training centres would welcome the attention and certainly I for one have no intention of completing a civvie course.
Rich, sorry, I have to disagree slightly. Yes, I agree that a coffee and a chat does go a fair way to forming an impression, but the only way to see if an instructor is actually delivering is to attend classes. Either as a student or as an observer. In fairness 'he' would not have to observe the whole course I suppose, just a certain percentage, selected without the tutor having prior knowledge.
Thoughts gentlemen?
 
Hi mate I would recommend you to do a course with an operational company in order to get good links and networking. If you perform well during the training they might offer you a job after the course.
 
Food for thought.

You say nobody could give a balanced view of the best TPs.
Why not look at some of the major companys and see what TPs are on there drop down menus.
If the one your looking at fits into (other) then this would be a no no for me.
They re the employers and its about which ones they respect.
Still not perfect but a start.
 
Excellentia. Trained with them, worked for them, rate them.

Their course is purely UK focussed, London based, residential and good value.

There you go - straight answer.

Having first passed a rigorous selection and interview, I attended and passed a Police National Close Protection course, of 4 weeks duration, having already completed 1 year of armed protection, shadowing and planning on CP events. Prior to attending the course I was already a member of the Tactical Firearms Unit and a 'Personal safety Instructor'.
As a prerequisite to the course students had to be qualified in the Police Close Protection 'Shoot' (80 rounds tactical, with 2 weapons, MP5 Kurtz and SLP), IED search awareness (I was a 'Search Trained' CT officer), Tactical First Aid and posses a high standard of physical fitness and an advanced driver.
We spent every morning of the first 2 weeks in the gym honing our Self Defence skills and in between took part in numerous scenarios involving Physical and Armed attacks on the Principal from multiple persons, individuals and IEDs.
Instructors wore Fist suits and made hard physical attacks, we were able to organise hostile crowds and had access to good quality cars and driving facilities.
We also had full access to a state of the art live firing range with facilities to set up almost any scenario from Cinemas to Cafes, from Streets to Nightclub scenes, using live fire video screens. Every Police CPO must attend training sessions and re-qualify on the range every month. If you fail the shoot or the fitness test after 2 attempts you are OUT. Your CPO status is withdrawn. In return you are trusted with the armed protection of Royalty (UK and visitors) Heads of State, Ambassadors, Politicians, Protected Witnesses and some other very interesting but politically sensitive individuals. i did that for 10 years until i retired.
Where, for the money, can you replicate that?
Aside from the obvious legal restrictions on firearms, you simply can't. But we'll teach you everything legally we can :)

courses with them are exceptional and they have excellent ex military/police instructors i know at least 30 people who have used them and found them to be very good at all types of training (and not a one minute there here next there gone company)
