Hi all,

I have a friend who is considering attempting SAS (R) Selection, i have a friend who was badged 21, he has passed a lot of info onto me, i was under the impression that a lot of their work is surveillance orientated, can anyone shed any light on this.

Any info is greatly appreciated

Kind regards

Hi jloveday,

21 role was predominantly long range reconnaissance. However, these days, due to over stretched requirements, 21 now works alongside their 22 counterparts directly for many ops. The role is now far more interesting than what it used to be with some tours expected to be in excess of 8+ months; (Iraq/ Afghan is so yesterday)

As far as age limits for entry is concerned; if you have good previous mil experience such as Parachute Regt or RM and you come over well in interview then as long as your legs can carry you with weight over long distances the age limit can be past 40 years old :D

Dig in, work hard and good luck.

If your mate is going to try A TIP get some brine for your feet, get the feet hard ,if your fit and can carry loads , should be plain sailing, one last thing, before you do any, anything think twice,Team work.
The only thing that let me down was my feet, all the best

Cheers mate, sorry to hear u didnt badge, will you try again in the future?

I have heard many remedies and potions and lotions for the hardening of feet :) its very true what you say i was a PTI in the army and i was taking 3 Loaded Marches a day sometimes and i had to keep on top of my feet or it would of been messy.

many thanks for your comments

23 didn't require any previous military experience however it was preferred. Those who go for selection from civvy street are now made to go through CMSR with 4 Para.

Their main role is reconnaisance and support and influence, they have tried to get into other areas such as bodyguarding, counter terrorist and that but failed, mainly due to the cost of keeping the blades up to date with their training.

They use the standard SA80A2 as their personal weapon even though they have been spotted using the Diemarco rifles (which they have on loan from 22).

Can't see 21 being much different. However, they do have the advantage of being a lot more closer to 22 than 23 is.

I would advise against putting anything on your feet to harden. If you have hard feet they may crack and get worse as it goes on. Just put some Vaseline (RM may help you out here:eek:) around your toes prior to a march and some tape on hot spots other than this keep hydrated with plenty of water, only. Make sure you are all over map reading, will save you loads of time if your navigation is good and route planning as well
Good luck hope this helps:cool:

Lots of potions and ideas out there ref feet, just get a good pair of boots and put plenty of miles in and see 'what works for you', whether it's compede, tape, vaseline, 2 pairs of socks..... A lot of rubs to harden the feet just harden the outside and blisters form underneath the hard skin. And it's not all fizz, make sure your mates nav is spot on. Best of luck

Echo Dodger's words; "foot hardening is not the way forward, but useing tape to protect tender areas will help.

Get used to carrying weight during hill training sessions - no need to be monster heavy, but a 60-70l pack filled with the usual outdoor gear; kit, water, scoff, rope and some hardware will do the trick.

Get hill fit.

Get navigation down to an art.

I'm an experienced hill wlker and confident mountaineer in winter conditions but recommend a combined navigation and mountain skills course.

Getting hill fit, with time, is quite easy; but without the ability and aptitude to be comfortable on the hills you'll strugle; get the principles of nav down to a t, and keep practicing.

What a load of cack. You obviously have no working concept of the mission statement nor of the task org of both organisations. They are both involved more than you know.

PMSL, what working concept - it doesn't work. Maybe in an ideal world where the Regiments have an ever filling pot of money and there wasn't any possibility of skill fade then yes. I suppose you think that all SAS(R) are all HALO/HAHO trained as well? LOL

What a band one knob you are.

They have blue and green skill sets,if you know what they there, but i very much doubt it.

If you had ever been in the group in any capacity you would know what they do do.

If you have a drama with the above PM me and i will glady give you my number so we can arrange a chat and a possible RV to square your intentions away.

why do people want to harden their feet when you need them nice and soft. However else will you be able to know if you are depressing the accelerator brake or clutch pedels correctly whilst driving around.

Remember that old saying, if the landrover cant get there, then neither can i lol

On the feet point. (turning into like a fetish forum this one is)

Anyway

I believe in hard feet, but not too hard. Need to be tough but still comfortable.Get them too hard and rock solid is bad and hard to get back to a healthy state.

Boots are incredibly important, go cheap and your feet will fall to pieces. For boots that I spend prolonged time in, I'm looking at £100+ (Current ones are the magnum enforcer sheild 8.0, rather nice boot if I may say so, one of the best i've ever had)
If material inside boots start to wear away, fray and rip (especially around the heel) this can and will cause blisters...best way to deal with this quickly is black gaffer tape, use a strip to cover the breakage on the boot, works for me and others I know. Cover the breakage on the material as quick as possible, leave it for a day and go for a hike - blister!

Mate,
Dont listen to 99% of the poeple on here because there dont know what there talking about ref SF. If you want to go for 23 phone up Biringham king standing TA and ask to speak to either the PSI or PSAO ref doing aptitude/selection, if 21 same again but phone regents park london. They'll give you all the CORRECT info you require.
