G4$ and the olympic saga

G4$ have really screwed this up before it even starts !!

The military is to provide up to 3,500 extra troops for security duty at the Olympics amid fears that private firm G4S will not be able to supply enough personnel, a Whitehall source has said.

The move, just a fortnight before the Games, is potentially a major embarrassment for organisers Locog.

The overall 23,700-strong security force for the Games will include a mix of military, private security guards and at least 3,000 unpaid London 2012 volunteers who will be used at the start of the security process.

A G4S spokeswoman said: "This has been an unprecedented and very complex security recruitment, training and deployment exercise which has been carried out to a tight timescale. We have encountered some issues in relation to workforce supply and scheduling over the last couple of weeks, but are resolving these every day and remain committed to providing a security workforce for the start of the London 2012 Games."

She went on: "Our planning with Locog and other security agencies allows for a variety of contingencies which have been reviewed in the build-up to the Games. We accept that the Government has decided to overlay additional resources. We remain committed to keeping London 2012 safe and secure."

Did we really expect anything different?

Of course it will all be brushed under the carpet and G4$ will go on dominating and ruining the market.

Hope they are going to pay the military personnel extra for stepping in to help. A few of G4S millions they've got on the contract, should help the MOD budget, if they have got to step in to compensate the numbers. Or doesn't it work like that lol.

pay the army more,oh nonono thats not gonna happen got more chance of biting the top of ya head.
this whole olympics is going to go tits up,we have rushed and left it all till last min, private security has rushed people through courses and now expected to go secure the ground dont get me wrong but there is some quality guys out there but more mongs.3000 unpaid security mmmmm professional i dont think so if i was not getting paid id sneak off and watch the games, just like theese will, they will be looking in rather than looking out.next we will have cub scouts checking tickets, and then there is our british forces placed ontop of houses guarding from alien invasion, wow i hope it all runs smoothly but i can see london are going to embarras them selfs, not just with security and games but the airports also,..a sorce says we have drafted suppourt in to help it all flow smoothly, right ok lets see how many illegal s enter this country it is gonna be mayhem.

but it will all be ok we have boys just got back from ganners and are now stood to ,for the games.
sit back enjoy and watch the mayhem unfold.

rant over.

more cancelled days off no doubt for cops and armed forces whilst g4$ sit back and count the money .... its a joke but nowt will get done about it

Makes me glad im nowhere near Stratford....
Central London for me!!

It doesn't suprise me that (G4 Gash) aren't up to the task having witnessed the crap dire security at Wimbledon last week.

Young guys and girls in ill fitting uniforms talking and mincing about in groups not paying much attention to the job in hand.

Guys walking around with hands in pockets or on there mobile phones.

It just looked very slack and un professional, it seems G4 Gash throw vast sums of money at a contract to secure top rated venues then fill it full of Er well Gash!!

And well done Federer for sticking it to that monotone "Sweaty Sock"!!

Addy: There is going to be some "Hacked off" squaddies knowing that there summer leave may be cancelled to secure the Olympic venues.

more olympic moan.

Did anyone experience the recent closure at London Bridge (sure other places did the same) where they used a day to 'practice for the olympics' put into place the steatergies they thought up to deal with excessive numbers. MY GOD IT WAS A DISASTER

thats what i mean we are not at all ready for this shit we will look like mugs, why we couldnt wait a few more years and sort our city out first ie they canceling all roadworks that were scheduled to be done, right ok so i guess these roads need doing cos they are dangerous or are borderline? well there ya go sacrifice safety for what....oh well where there is blame there is a claim.

our lads i feel sorry for some of them providing safety have been made redundant, but because they are professional warriors they will grin and carry out the job to best ability. now i know some of ya give G4S some banter but to be fair they struggled taking on a massive job and dont have the man power falling flat on their face, but hey if i was offerd the money they were then i would have gave it a damn good go to, true they ****ed it up only cos they never had the right amount of time to prepare, and i blame the leader of the whole operation. be it government or some military officer with a silver spoon rammed up his arse. what is happening to this island that was once known as GREAT Britain.

Recruitment and training carried out at a very tight time schedule? Hmmmmmmm when did London get awarded the Olympics? 3 months ago!!!! Of course not. They have had years to plan for the Olympic security by recruiting and training the staff in advance. Surely someone should be called to task and asked to face the tough questions. I can tell from personal experience that going through the Olympic screening they lost my documents after I delivered them in hand twice and sent the other 2 by registered mail. So there could be someone out there with a passport or other things with as they lost things that people can use to obtain just about what they want.

When you recruit students, volunteer, job centre people who were sent to work etc. They want to use the cheapest labour as possible so as not to affect the bottom line.

I worked at tennis this year and agree with the comments about minimum wage staff walking about in ill fitting uniforms, hands in pockets, chatting on the mobile phones. They want not to be brought issues especially with solutions. I see that this was the worst security time I have experienced at the club. So many kids walking around doing critical jobs. Kids, retirees, students etc walking about. I will leave it at that.

U.K. adds 3,500 military personnel to London Olympics security detail - CBS News

In 1996 Atlanta had the Olympics. I am from one of the near by cities. To my knowledge there were no rockets and missiles on top of apartments, private homes etc. The need to call up more military should be a concern for all of us. I know this is a time of security scaring of the terrorists. If I were involved in this situation I would have started long before G4 did in training and recruitment. The day the Olympics were announced and when they got the contract training, recruitment etc should have started. So I don't feel sorry for them for one second.

What? How many YEARS have they had to get their shit together? All we hear are tales of people who have been screwed around by them, training put off and off and off, endless lost documents, endless examples of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, contradictions, and amid all that endless TARGETS for their staff to meet.

Such as the farce of allocating each new employee only SIX MINUTES for their vetting to be done by someone who was themselves UNVETTED.

Everything about G4$ is target based from management vists completed in one day to (evidently) vetting of staff. They would obviously have set long term targets to meet the Olympic demands by, probably underpinned by many shorter term targets which many of us know are often impractical and entirely based on needing LESS staff to do MORE work in order to maximise profit.

We all said from the start they would screw it up, not for banter, but for the fact that the companies focus is not service but money. G4S is not known as G4$ or G(roup)4 S(hit) for no reason.

Just as an example I was called by G4S and asked to apply for a Duty Manager role at one of their Olympic Event venues. I went to an assessment day on 30th April and gave them all the information they required to vet me, CRB me etc etc.

I had to call them a month later to see if I had passed the assessment, I had, I then had to ask them for a job spec and pay rate etc. I then had a text from a mobile number requesting personal information for my CRB check, I called the number and told the person at the other end that I would not divulge personal information to anyone who asks me by text for it, could be anyone! I requested that they send me an email from a G4S account and I would reply with all the details they required............the days pass and a further 7 texts requesting the same and more information...............
I managed to call their Olympic recruitment people and confirm what information they required and gave it to them................3 more requests by text for the same information..........

I then received an email requesting that I call a number to attend training, 5/6 calls later, no answer, messages left.......I gave up.

2 weeks ago I was emailed requesting the mobile phone numbers for my referees, 10 days ago my referees were phoned for a reference.............no written confirmation etc, just a phone call to a mobile phone.

My CRB had never been carried out, I have, in the mean time had to apply twice to Disclosure Scotland for checks and received the results within 10 days.

I have now accepted another role with another company for the period covering the Olympics for better money and better working conditions.

So, a very experienced security manager, with CP licence was not employed by G4S because they could not sort their admin out...I expect that I am one of hundreds, if not thousands that they have messed up with and if they had employed me than they would need one less soldier.

Why they were given the whole contract I will never know, hands in back pockets no doubt!! Each venue should have been allowed to recruit its own company to supply their security and stewards and each company should have only been allowed to supply 1 venue, Keep It Simple Stupid and easy to manage. When will people realise that CHEAPEST is NEVER the best option.

Having carefully weighed the situation up, i live fairly close to the Olympic site i have decided the safest option is to take a contract in Iraq while Mrs P summers in Spain.

So now the army have two weeks to get enough people together, organise accommodation, feeding, laundry facilities etc (bearing in mind that they have already had to do this for the other 13500), train them, get their accreditation sorted and get them to and from the venues through the London traffic. This is going to be interesting.

G4S should be sued for breach of contract and should have been kicked off the contract months ago for their lousy security. That would have given the army or another private contractor more time to prepare the necessary staff and logistics.

yes they should!

but realistically though - it would have left the doors open to companies to set whatever price they want. "you need us, you pay us £x5 of G4$" who else would be able to cover this event? ShowSec?

Let G4$ carry on, then sue them to buggary after 2012

If we survive that long.

Realistically, people saw G4S as a big compnay and therefore able to cope with it, but then they didn't employ their normal staff and tried to get loads of new people. Other big events work by getting smaller companies to do different bits, such as one company doing the perimeter controls, another doing security inside, another doing external car parks etc. Its a model that works elsewhere and could have allowed companies to use their existing and trusted staff, instead of throwing a load of newbies at such and important event.

That would not have happened. The mentality in the industry is not of that nature. Sure a few would would have said that, but then the undercutters would have stepped in.

That is why security is still a below the living wage / minimum wage job.
