As far as I'm aware you need to be a US Citizen to join the police in America.

Thats the trouble though most are not aware. Every State has different policies as well as cities and towns.

Cities and towns are governed by state recruitment regulations. Rapier is right. The majority require citizens and if not US permanent residents. Whatever the case it aint no walk in the park.

Hope this helps Gents..

Same and similar boat as me and I work with a bunch of dreamers who think they are the dogs bollocks. In reality the biggest waste of space I have ever come across, sickies, penny pinching and down and out lazy.

Quotes: -
1. I can't carry that utility belt it's damaging my back
2. The lights in this station give me bad heads
3. It's too hot in here
4. It's freezing outside
5. Look at me I carry a gun.

what about webbing and bergen
Lights, out
Too hot - try the Gulf
Too cold - try -30 with wind chill
Carried a gun all my working life....... yawn
I'll do overtime - what overtime.

Best one is a 24 yr old special wanting to join as pc can't run 1.5 miles in under 15 minutes. That's just the warm up.

As always ask any member of the public who they would rather have "Policing " the streets and it would be unanimously in favour of "THE SOLDIER" every time. Not some inexperienced student who the establishment can brainwash with the PC values that makes up and takes up 99% of the officers time.
Maybe that is what they are frightened of, men who have been there seen it done it ! which more than most of the "civil leaders" will ever do.Imagine how embarrassing it could be for them commanding a man with more life experience than them.
I have been turned down for many jobs because i was overqualified with my engineering qualifications.
I for one would have the "SOLDIER" patrolling the streets.

NASH..

Thanks to bullit. I assume that I am one of these plod muppetts who has just spent 25 years having a cushy time whilst persecuting speeders outside coffee shops.

Whereas I can't speak aout the circs of the interview at Durham, what I can say is that both the military and police have their own demands and skills. Some are similar and some are grossly different. I for one appreciate what conditions military personnel live and serve under. However it is clear from this discussion that some military personel do not appreciate what the police contend - but this is not an attempt to plead that case.

The majority on this site are probably ex military personnel so it is understandable that a common support is shared, but please do not make the mistake of dismissing the service of others. The roles of police and military will always be different yet complimentary.

No it wouldn't. I'm a member of the public, so that ruins the 'unanimously' aspect, because I want police officers policing the streets.

Soldiers don't 'police' the streets, they would patrol the streets. There is a massive difference.

How many threads on this forum are from people, a lot of which are mil looking towards discharge dates, that say 'how do I get into SO19' or 'SO19 or MPD' or similar?

This shows a complete lake of understanding about what policing is all about.

And before any of you bayonet fighting ninjas start jumping up and down in fury, remember that like me, there are a significant amount of forum users that have had significant military careers, and then actively pursued a successful career in policing when we left the mil. We therefore speak with some experience on this matter.

I agree with other replys to this statement. Soldiers on the streets would not 'Police' but patrol and react in a totally different way to a Policeman, hell I know Military Police who can't bloody speak to people let alone an 18 year old tom from the factory weilding an SA80. I don't want to see it and I dare say that most on this forum would not like to either.

If chaos decends and the Police totally fail, then we will draft in Military assistance but at present we neither need it nor want it in a Policing capacity.

Starlight and RCS have hit it on the head. It is horses for courses. During my first five years I was Army Liaison and patrolled with them on a daily basis. I did the Police stuff and they (usually 3 bricks) looked after me. When the s*** hit the fan I just left it to the Army and tagged along. There is no definite line that a Soldier will make a good Policeman. I have worked with ex military who turned into exceptional Policemen but have worked with ones who have been absolute tossers who were probably tossers in the Army as well. I do not know the recruiting policy of the particular force could the applicant have just failed the interview. People look for excuses when they have failed something IMHO

important question

Bullitt,

20+ years you have known the green way, and you decide to go for the police and fail due to a small glitch.
My question is how long have you been out, how many position/ jobs have you applied for and please dont give up on maybe your first rejection. Take this negative & turn it into a positive.
I am ex forces, but when you haven't got immediate backup and no weapon Which would happen at anytime within the police how would you react.
You cannot knock a police force or even compare it with the forces unless you have actually done the job.

It seems to me that we may have a common case of personality clash.
Lifes too short. accept the decision move on and succeed which with your background I am sure you will.

:eek::p:D

Police better than Military

I believe that Police are better trained for protection their instruction revolves around a community and have better outside the box thinking. military, while a highly organized corporation tend to focus more on kill and ask questions later. more training about the movement of personnel, war strategies, personal fitness, survival, land nav, usually things that are not used in a community. that is why they had so many problems in IRAQ. they still throw their privates in unprotected post and they get sniped. Police tend to use different tacticts such as to catch a wolf you have to be one. as a police officer you utilize more tactics that protect others and minimize losses, investigations not by utilizing UAV'S but by going out and exploiting weak links. they tend to have better training in close combat firearms while in the army you lay on the floor shooting at targets half a mile away. while clearing houses and rooms police utilize their brains in order to enter a facility. while the army has a more barbaric aproach by quicking in the door and everybody rushes in. which they refer to MOUT training. I heard somebody say that an acceptable loss while clearing a house is 90 % not sure which army but somebody saying that is that they even have an "acceptable loss" as police officers always have new training by everyday scenarios and share and learn. in the army there is training that is older that your grandfather but it is outdated in the real world.
which we saw in Vietnam. Everybody though it was going to be as WWII but different tacticts were implemented by the vietnamese which caused a huge loss on the american side. :D
